Orihuela Costa, Spain 2022: My Gluten Free Travel Guide

Updated: May 7, 2024

Wondering where to eat gluten free in Orihuela Costa? You're in the right place, then!

For those wanting a beach vacation with their family, Orihuela Costa is the perfect location. The region covers several seaside resorts including Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Villamartin, Campoamor and Mil Palmeras. Most importantly though, is the delicious gluten free food at these locations.

There are lots of restaurants in Orihuela Costa that are coeliac friendly or provide gluten free options on their menus, so this is the perfect location to visit.

The phrases listed below should help to double check with staff and inform them of your dietary requirements.

Gluten Free Spanish Phrases:

Soy celiaco (m), soy celiaca (f) = I am coeliac

Sin gluten = gluten free

No puedo comer gluten / harina de trigo = I can’t eat gluten / wheat flour

Here is my gluten free Orihuela Costa guide...

My favourite restaurant by far was this one; the pizza and pasta dishes were outstanding and cooked to perfection. I ordered the ‘Al Curry Pasta’, gluten free of course and didn’t know whether I’d like it or not, but surprisingly it was so tasty. The garlic bread with cheese was also fantastic; it melted to perfection and was scrumptious!

Even though there weren't many options for gluten free guests when we chose this restaurant for our Sunday lunch, the three course set menu looked appealing. My roast dinner was nonetheless good despite the fact that I was unable to have the gravy with it. I have to admit that the chocolate cake was out of this world - one to recommend.

The restaurant served wonderful, genuine Spanish food and was knowledgeable about gluten free alternatives. The menu clearly indicated allergens, which was quite helpful when deciding what I wanted to eat. As a tapas starter, we ordered patatas bravas, then for our main course, we decided to try the paella!

We started shopping at La Zenia, then chose this diner to have some lunch at, since it offered nachos, burgers, chips, and many other dishes. This restaurant, is a chain of American style diners with a whole gluten free menu, taking you back to the 1950s. The food was tasty despite being prepared in a fast food style.

This restaurant was fantastic for my family and I. They were incredibly helpful with the menu in terms of what could be made gluten free, and clearly recognised that the meal needed to be gluten free. The hot plates could be used to cook meat or fish, which was fantastic. Since I hadn't eaten fajitas in a while, I chose to order them. They were excellent! I would definitely go back, oh, and the gluten free carrot cake for dessert was gorgeous!

smöoy is a Spanish franchise that manufactures and sells frozen yogurt: low fat, high in fibre and gluten free. You pick your frozen yoghurt flavour and then add toppings like fruit, sauces, and sweets; however, only some of the toppings are gluten free. When I've purchased a smöoy, I informed them that I'm coeliac, and they've added the toppings on in the back from the containers, to ensure no cross contamination, which is incredible and made me feel so safe.

The Spanish Coeliac Society gave McDonald's in Spain advice on proper safety measures and now McDonald's offers a gluten free burger bun. Even if it's just once, we always stop by McDonald's while we're in Spain, so of course I have to take advantage of the fact that I can get a gluten free burger!

I hope my Orihuela Costa, Spain 2022: My Gluten Free Travel Guide has been helpful. Of course, there are a lot more options for gluten free dining in Orihuela Costa, so if you have any recommendations, please let me know! I'm sure I'll be returning to Orihuela Costa soon, so hopefully I can check out some new restaurants! Who knows where my next journey will lead me...

Thanks so much for reading!
