Budapest, Hungary 2023: My Gluten Free Travel Guide

Updated: Mar 13, 2023

Are you visiting Budapest and looking for gluten free options? Look no further. You've come to the right place.

Budapest is one of Europe's most beautiful cities, and it was the ideal destination for a long weekend getaway. In between meals, Budapest is a pretty remarkable city. We spent our time exploring the city, visiting thermal baths, heading to bars, and taking a prosecco river cruise!

If you have coeliac disease or are gluten intolerant, there are many suitable restaurants in Budapest. In this blog post, I've listed all of the gluten free restaurants and cafés that I had the pleasure of visiting and found to be completely safe for coeliacs.

Here is my gluten free Budapest guide...

Kata Restaurant is a must-visit whether you are gluten free or not. We chose this restaurant because we had heard so many good things about the food, and I must say that I agree! We ordered starters, mains, and dessert, and I'm glad we did. Everything on the menu was lactose and gluten free, so there were plenty of choices.

The Hard Rock Café is a restaurant that can be found in almost any city around the world. The gluten free menu includes a variety of gluten free options, as well as a separate fryer for chips. There are a few in Budapest, so if you like Hard Rock Café, you should definitely go! (The beer in the photo below contains gluten; it wasn't mine!)

McDonald's in Budapest, like many other European countries, offers a gluten free burger bun! On our trip, we stopped at McDonald's, where I could select a gluten free bun from the self-service machines, making it a very quick and easy experience. The burger was delicious; we need these burger buns in the UK!

We came across the Monkey Bistro while visiting Buda Castle, and they had an allergen key on the menu indicating which dishes were gluten free. The grilled salmon steak with passion fruit salad and oven baked potatoes was delicious. It was a great find when we were at Buda Castle because it was the closest gluten free restaurant to visit in the area.

A small gluten free café with a few gluten-free options, including 100% gluten free pre-made sandwiches and a variety of pastries. We went there in the morning to get a hot drink for breakfast, and then I had to try the gluten free cinnamon bun that was available!

The restaurant where we ate, Non Gluten Pizzeria, was completely gluten free. You'll find gluten free pizza, pasta, and salads that are free of cross contamination here. Several people recommended this restaurant to me, but if I went back, I would definitely order the pizza instead of the pasta!

I genuinely hope you enjoyed my Budapest, Hungary 2023: My Gluten Free Travel Guide. Please let me know if you come across any other restaurants that you think I should try. I can't wait to go back to Budapest and try more gluten free restaurants (I didn't get through my entire list because there were too many!) Who knows where my next adventure will take me...

Thanks so much for reading!
